Vancouver, WA
1999
Out of the shower, grab towel and phone rings . . .
Me: this is Jason
Phone caller: Jason this is doug pagitt, is this a good time to talk?
Me: sure, if you don’t mind that I am naked
DP: (giggle) sure that’s perfect . . .
. . . . conversation that it is completely forgettable
Dallas, TX (Starbucks)
1999
Meeting the great Tom Davis for the first time
Tom: Doug said that you did your first interview with you naked?
Me: yep, true. He mentioned that to you
Tom (big laugh) yes apparently he really liked that
I am pretty sure this is the only basis Doug evaluated my worthiness for the job as Young Leader Network Coordinator. The interview with Leadership Network to take the Young Leader Network position was a cluster from the beginning.
-Two phone calls with Doug
-Doug visits Vancouver we play golf and he comes to the church. I preach a weak sermon while he plays on his Palm Pilot.
-Fly to Dallas and meet with LN team. Brad Smith makes Cheryl cry. Off
Meet Brad and Suely Cecil, Andrew and Debbie Jones and Doug and Shelley Pagitt at Dave and Busters (good Lord kill me). Brad repeats over and over that we “work real hard”(read obsessive workaholism) . . .to my replies of “I won’t sacrifice my wife on the alter of this job”(read I already did that at the church plant experience)
-Brad hates me. Doug is optimistic (read desperate to find replacement so he can move back to MN to plant Solomons Porch . . . )
-fly to DC for aforementioned conference at Brian’s church, train to New York for Young Leaders Gathering and meet Mark Driscoll, Chris Seay, Tony Jones, Brian McLaren, Rudy Carrasco, Jeff Bailey (remember him ?? what is up!) and Tim Conder (who to this day I cannot decide whether is the most genuine person on the whole planet or full of crap . . . just sayin’). The trip is spent with Doug buying huge dinners, bottles of wine in appreciation for the “hard work” of the Group of Twenty. According to a future co-worker, Doug brought only cash and submitted NO RECEIPTS for that trip . . . but of course LN picked up the bill. After one meeting where driscoll was advocating for a “speakers network” and others talk of leaving LN to start a new group (Emergent?) I confronted doug on a late night walk by saying if you guys are all leaving then I will not take this job. He assured me “we will not go anywhere”. Mark.
-Fly to LA to have one more meeting with Brad Smith so he can offer me job and sign off on me
-fly to Long Beach to attend another ridiculous meeting
-accept job. What in the living hell was I thinking?
I am clearly retarded.

Best blog post, ever.
I met you at that aforementioned conference, hung out, drank a beer. You confided you were considering the YLN job. I was stoked for you, and you just looked empty. That look still haunts me, even to this day.
(Jeff Bailey? Married, Masters at Duke, PhD at Cambridge, professorship in UK. Three beautiful kids.)

Ooops, sorry: Bailey’s got two beautiful kids. I was thinking of Tony Jones’ three beautiful kids.
I always get those two mixed up.
Oh, and I’m real sorry to have missed your nonverbal cry for help. It sounds like one of those hostage scenes where the cop comes to the door and the hostage is acting all normal but the cop suspects something and quietly says, “if you’re in danger, just blink twice.”
I shall wait patiently for your next posts to find out just how much I failed you.

remember the Blue Man Group.
And how about a Molly Smallen shout-out?
elmol // March 1, 2008 at 3:54 am |
blue man group was genius in that wheels off gritty theater . . . before it jumped the shark and moved to vegas.
And she does deserve a shout out for surviving two LN regime changes . . . glad you recognize that here INSTEAD of your book . . .

I always knew that Emergent was somehow influenced by the Blue Man Group. It all makes sense now …

i remember you saying you were leaving the ‘couv for this job and i was the only staff person excited. whoops. i just wanted you to be happy and for mike b to take over and change the name of your church.

Blue Man Group was excellent.
Jason, if you remember, I heard your side (walking in NYC with Mimi and Molly while you talked on your cell) of perhaps a final interview with Brad. You definitely had some good fears and restated them accurately in your posts.
As for being “genuine” or “full of crap” — can I be both? Or would that redefine “bi-polar” in some unique and pyschologically illegal manner?

How about the Seafarers House – I think we had rooms for $49. The bathroom was in the hall but hey for $49.
I remember walking across the street to a club. I asked a guy selling tickets “who is playing and how much?” He told me Bens Fold Five and some ridiculous price. I said I’ll give you $5 – he took it and it was a great show.
Bens Fold, Blue Man Group, dinner at Carmine’s, our meeting at the “God Box” and MTV.
I do remember that late night walk in the east village with Pagitt telling Mitchell “No one is going anywhere if you take this job.”
this is great stuff Mitchell
